How to Drive for Uber Without a Car – I’ll Explain

I know it sounds contradicting.. How can you possibly drive for Uber without a car? Well it is possible, very possible and there are people that do this. But I’m sure you already know that and that is why you are on reading this post.

So if it is YOU that are looking to drive for Uber and it is YOU that do not have a car, don’t worry. I’m going to explain how to become an Uber driver without a car.

What you have is 3 options.. You can either rent a car, lease a car, or buy a new car. What I’m going to go over here is renting or leasing a car for Uber driving.

But the first step is knowing what cars qualify for driving with Uber.

What Type Car Can I Drive?

There are a bunch of different Uber services you can drive for and they all have different requirements as to the qualifications of your vehicle.

UberX is the most common of them and this is generally what you think of when you think Uber. It is the cheapest service that Uber offers, it is the easiest to qualify for, and it is the most requested. For a car to qualify for UberX it must meet the following…

  • 4 door sedan
  • Working windows & A/C
  • 2006 or newer (Generally,  but it can be older in some cities)
  • No cosmetic damage
  • No salvaged vehicles

Since you do not have a car and you will have to be renting or leasing a car to drive for Uber, I suggest getting one that is UberX qualified, nothing more. Because this way you won’t have to pay too much for renting/leasing and there is the most opportunity with UberX, it is the most requested service by far.

Rent a Car With Uber

When you sign up to drive for Uber you are given the choice to rent a car. The rental times are very flexible and can accompany any crazy schedule. You can rent for a week, a month, a day, and even for less than a day if you really want to.

Not everyone that qualifies to drive for Uber will qualify to rent a car. While Uber’s driver requirements state that you must be 21 years of age, the required age to be able to rent a car is 25. And on top of that you must also have a credit or debit card, which I’m sure that isn’t a problem.

There are many companies that you can rent cars from to drive with Uber, but what I recommend is going through Uber’s partner rental services which include Hertz, Enterprise, and Hyrecar. Hertz & Enterprise is your normal kind of car rental service, but Hyrecar is a bit different.

Hertz

If you want to rent an Uber to drive through Hertz it is going to cost you $180 minimum, and that is for a 7 day rental. 7 days is the minimum you can rent a car for and the maximum is 28 days. This includes unlimited miles, maintenance costs, roadside assistance, and damage protection for damage in excess of $1000, but does not include liability coverage.

There is also a $200 security deposit that you must pay before you can drive the car, you will get this amount back if you return the car without damage.

This rate doesn’t include taxes, fees, etc.

Enterprise

Enterprise offers rentals for Uber drivers at a minimum of $215 for a weeks time. This includes unlimited miles, liability coverage, and physical damage protection for damage costing more than $1000.

The security deposit that is required for an Enterprise rental is $300 which you will get back if the car is returned without damage.

This rate doesn’t include taxes, fees, etc.

Hyrecar

Hyrecar works differently than the rental services above. With Hyre car people can put their personal vehicles up for rental through them. The price of a car rental here will vary the car owner but I have seen Uber certified cars that you can rent out for as low as $120/week. The owner specifies daily, weekly, and monthly mileage limits.

With an Uber driver rental through Hyrecar you are provided with insurance. The insurance covers up to $25,000 in damage and $300,000 in liability. There is a $1,000 deductible.

Lease a Car With Uber

If you are looking to get a car that is Uber qualified for the long term, but you still don’t want to buy your own car, then leasing a car with Uber is one of the options you have. The Uber lease program is called Xchange Leasing. They partner with dealerships all over to make leasing through them a little easier and less costly.

In order to qualify for this you must have a “decent” credit history, but it doesn’t have to be stellar. All credit levels are welcome to apply and I know people that have been accepted with not so good credit, but they won’t accept everyone. Things like bankruptcies and car repossessions may disqualify you.

The lowest price per week of leasing that you will find is about $100/week. But the price of the lease is obviously going to depend on things like: what type of car you are leasing, how new it is, etc. To give you an example of what you can expect to pay here is an Example of pricing from Uber themselves…

The minimum “disposition fee”, or what is more commonly known as the security deposit, is $250. After 30 days of leasing you are able to cancel your lease, but will lose this deposit.

When leasing a car through the Uber Xchange Leasing program, you get to enjoy things like unlimited mileage, liability insurance, and covered basic maintenance costs. What is also nice is that they automatically deduct the weekly payments from your Uber earnings.

What You Should Do If You Don’t Have a Car

Obviously having your own car is going to be the best option. And there is actually an Uber new car discount program if you would want to buy a new car at a discounted price. But as far as renting or leasing a car goes, it is generally better to rent a car if you are just going to be using it for a short period of time (days to weeks) and lease a car if you are going to be renting it longer (months to years).

But don’t limit your options to the renting and leasing programs that I have just went over in which Uber is partnered with. Check dealerships and rental services near and around your area. Uber makes it easy to rent or lease a car through them, but there are better (cheaper) deals out there that qualify for Uber’s rideshare services.

Its also important to note that the Uber renting and leasing options are not available in all areas. To find out for sure if they are in your area you would have to simply sign up to see.
