Do Uber Drivers Need Special Insurance? Maybe..
Are Uber drivers insured? Yes, they have to be… All driving partners are going to need insurance, but do Uber drivers need special insurance? The answer to that is no…probably. What I mean by that is that most Uber drivers will not need special insurance, but some will. I know it may sound confusing, but its not and will be going over everything you need to know about what insurance you need, the insurance that Uber gives you, and more.
Uber requires all drivers to have their vehicle covered with their own insurance policy that is up to the standards of state and local laws.
But there are different types of vehicle insurance that you could have, personal insurance or commercial insurance.
The requirements will vary depending on what Uber service you are driving for. The more common and less luxurious services require your regular personal insurance, whereas the rarer luxury Uber services require that you have commercial insurance.
Here is a list of the different Uber services and what type of insurance you will be required to have…
UberX – Personal vehicle insurance
UberXL – Personal vehicle insurance
UberSELECT – Personal vehicle insurance
UberLUX – Personal vehicle insurance or Commercial insurance (Varies depending on your location)
UberLUX SUV – Personal vehicle insurance or Commercial insurance (Varies depending on your location)
UberBLACK – Commercial insurance
UberSUV – Commercial insurance
Looking To Drive For UberLUX? How To Find Out What Insurance You Need
As stated above, some areas will require UberLUX drivers to have their vehicle commercially covered while other areas only require personal vehicle coverage.
So how do you find out what you need in your area?
First go to www.uber.com/drive and if you look at the top menu you will see a place called “Local Driver Guide”. Click on that.
This will take you to information about Uber regarding your area. If you scroll down you will see an area where you can select a topic. You want to click on Vehicle Requirements.
Once you click on that you will be provided with Uber’s list of services that are available in your area. If UberLUX requires you to get commercial insurance it will specifically state that. If it does not say anything regarding commercial insurance then that means you do not need it.
Personal Insurance vs Commercial Insurance
Personal vehicle insurance is designed for an individual or a family. It is what the average consumer has and is easy to get a policy for. It protects personal assets, such as car damage, hospital bills, etc.
Commercial vehicle insurance, on the other hand, is designed for businesses. Vehicles that are used for business related purposes should be covered commercially. These policies assume that multiple people from the business will be driving the vehicle and because of this they generally have more coverage.
The downside to commercial insurance is that it costs more and is more difficult to get.
Why does Uber require commercial for certain services?
Honestly it doesn’t make much sense to me. UberBLACK drivers are doing the same exact thing that UberX drivers are doing, just they are driving a much nicer car and are dressed up.
Both drivers are using their cars for business related purposes. So why the difference?
Your Insurance Might Not Be Good Enough
Personal insurance policies have a list of exclusions, or things that will not be in your coverage. And “driving-for-hire” happens to be on of the exclusions that some insurance policies might have.
Because UberX, UberXL, and UberSELECT could be considered commercial driving, they might be excluded in your insurance policy. Although Uber themselves don’t require you to have commercial insurance for these services, you might not have the choice. A lot of this depends on the state you are driving in.
Don’t panic though, lots of personal insurance policies will cover your Uber driving. But you should check your policy to confirm this.
if your personal insurance doesn’t cover it, and since commercial insurance is more expensive than personal insurance, I would check around for another insurance provider before paying for commercial.
Insurance Provided By Uber
Besides having your own vehicle coverage, Uber will provide you with extra insurance. Their insurance policy cover drivers when they are either on a “trip” or in between trips. And just to be clear, a trip is the time from when you accept the trip to the time when you drop off the passengers at the destination.
On a Trip
- $1 million liability insurance policy that covers your liability to third parties.
- $1 million uninsured/underinsured motorist injury insurance policy that covers bodily injury to anyone in the Uber vehicle if accident was caused by another driver and they don’t have adequate insurance.
- Contingent collision and comprehensive insurance policy that covers vehicle damage (must have personal insurance for this to apply). This has a deductible.
In Between Trips
- Insurance policy that covers third party liability up to $100,000 in bodily injury and property damage per accident.
So first you need to check what type of insurance you will need for the Uber service you wish to drive for. If Uber requires you to have commercial insurance then there is no way around it. If Uber only requires you to have personal insurance then good for you, but I would still let your insurance company know that you are going to be driving for Uber.
