Amazon Flex Background Check – What You Need To Know

If you want to be able to enjoy the flexible hours and $18/hr minimum pay of working for Amazon Flex, you are first going to have to pass the Amazon Flex background check, or I guess I should say “checks” (plural) because there are 2 of them which include a comprehensive criminal background check as well as a motor vehicle background check.

The background checks come into play after you have initially signed up to drive for Amazon Flex, been contacted for interest, filled out their survey, and been invited to download the app.

It is once you have the app that you will be able to sign in and provide you driver’s license and SSN so that they can run the two background checks.

Who Conducts The Background Checks?

accurate background check amazon As for the motor vehicle background check, I am unsure, but for the criminal background check Amazon contracts a third party service called Accurate Background to run the background checks for their employees and partners.

Once you have submitted your information through the Amazon Flex app for the background check, that info is then forwarded to Accurate Background to run the check.

If you have made a mistake and put in incorrect information, then you have to contact Accurate Background directly instead of Amazon.

You can contact them at 800-216-8024

How Long Does It Take?

Amazon tells you that it should only take 2-4 days for the background check to clear, but this is just a general time range. It could take a lot longer depending on what your background is.

If you have a clean background and have provided all the correct information, then it should clear pretty fast. But if you have a background full of offenses that Accurate Background has to look into, then it could take a lot longer. You may even be contacted by Accurate Background to about past offenses that you have had.

I have heard of it taking up to a month to be cleared from those with complicated backgrounds and many offenses.

Still Pending?

There is no way to know how far along the background check is. Once you submit your SSN and give consent for them to run the check all you can do is sit back and wait. In the Flex app it will show up as pending when the background check is still in progress.

If your check is taking longer than you think it should and you are worried about it, the only advice I can give is to contact Accurate Background at their 800-216-8024 support number.

How Far Back Does The Check Go?

For the criminal background check, Accurate Background will check your history back 7 years. This is the same as related jobs such as Uber and seems to be the industry standard.

If you have been convicted of criminal offenses in this time range you may not be qualified for the job.

Note: I have however heard cases of the background check missing offenses, so it may still be in your interest to apply since it only takes a few minutes.

The Type Of Offenses Make A Difference

Amazon nor Accurate Background give specifics as to what types of offenses and incidents they will let slide and what types will be prohibited. But the type offense does matter.

Amazon does NOT hire felons of any kind as far as I know from my research. You may be able to get an Amazon job as a felon going through certain job agencies, but this doesn’t apply to the Amazon Flex driver positions.

As for misdemeanors, you have a chance of getting hired even if they have occurred in the past 7 years. Minor motor vehicle offenses also will not ruin your chances of being hired.

How Do You Know When The Background Checks Have Cleared?

You won’t be receiving any email or anything when your background check clears. So how will you know?

Well when you open up the Amazon Flex app there will be a list of things that have to be completed before you are officially a driver. These include…

  • Background Check
  • Tax (info)
  • Payment Information
  • Videos (training)

When the background check is still being conducted, it will say “pending” next to it. And when it is competed there will be a green check mark beside it.

Will You Pass?

If you have a clean record then of course you are going to pass. But if you have offenses on your criminal record or accidents on your driving record, then you probably aren’t.

You won’t pass with any felonies in the past 7 years, and you won’t pass with certain misdemeanors. But there are minor offenses that you will be able to pass with.

The only real way to find out if you pass or not is to sign up for Amazon Flex and find out. There is no reason not to do so unless you are positive that you won’t pass. It only takes a few minutes to sign up and it doesn’t cost you anything.

What’s The Next Step After You Pass

Honestly I don’t think many people will have the problem of not being able to pass. Most will be able to with flying colors.

If you are one of those who do pass then you can immediately start to work.

The next step would be to set your availability calendar inside the app. This lets Amazon know when you are available to work and they will assign you “blocks” or shifts when they want you to deliver for them.

Note: You may get assigned a low amount of blocks or even none at all. This is because there are a lot of Flex drivers and not enough blocks available. However, you can pick up more Amazon Flex blocks and you can learn how to do that here.

Do you have anything to share about a personal experience with the Amazon Flex background check? Comments? Questions? Leave them below in the comment section and I’ll get back to you soon 🙂

I have a reckless driving in 2014 will I still get hired?

Reply
    Kyle - April 7, 2017

That could depend on the severity. The only real way to find out is to actually apply and see. It only takes 5 minutes to do so, so I would start with that and find out.

I’m sorry I cannot give you a yes or no answer on this.

I got a ticket for driving on a suspended license two days after I came back from deployment. They had issued me a court date for a hearing on a ticket after I already deployed overseas so I had no way of knowing my license would be suspended when I returned. It was through a random inspection at the gate of the base I was stationed at. What do you think my chances are? Uber and Lyft did not seem to care.

    Kyle - May 6, 2017

Ray, I think you will be fine. The ticket you got in no way shows that you are a reckless driver or anything like that.

There is always the chance they could let it slide because its been so long. But I wouldn’t chance it. I would wait it out another 2 and 1/2 months and then apply.

Peter I am unsure of the details of your charge. Was this a driving related charge?

    Reply

No it was not driving related, but the charge comes up the way I wrote it in my previous message. It only comes up like this on my background check.

Reply
    Kyle - June 16, 2017

Since it is non-driving related, it is just a misdemeanor, and its been almost 6 years since it happened I would say your chances are good that they will overlook it. But its hard to say for sure.

I have been a successful deliver driver with a courier service which contracts with Amazon. Having recently experienced an event which landed me in jail for 60 days, a misdemeanor, I was surprised to find I could not get my job with the courier service due to my background check. The courier service will attest that my performance with them would warrant my returning to work as a deliver driver. However, they have informed me their hands are tied by Amazons’ determination. Accurate Background list the offense as a “Protective Order Violation”. Can I do anything to get back in their good graces? I did so much enjoy the job.
Thank you

Daniel, the only advice I can think of would be to contact support over this. You will need to get in contact with a person and explain your situation and see if there is anywhere to go from there.

Hey Kyle, I wanted to provide an update on my June 10th comment above. I didn’t realize when I received my background check in the mail, it had meant I had already applied, no turning back at that point. I had been crossing my fingers waiting for an approval. Well, I went to log in to the Amazon Flex app on June 16th and I was immediately greeted with this message, “Sorry! Your background check has failed. Please check your email for more information.” This basically meant I was denied. I was bummed for few days. I didn’t think much more about it after a few days. Then low and behold on June 22nd I get an email from Amazon Flex titled, Welcome to Amazon Flex- Get Started. I re-downloaded the app, picked my delivery location and finished the setup process. I already got a delivery block offered and scheduled for this Sunday. Pretty stoked! Don’t give up hope folks. Even though I did, I didn’t expect to get an approval after the denial. Pretty excited and nervous. Thanks again!

I failed my background check just because I had a misdemeanor for failure to dispurse because I was wrongfully arrested for being at a protest doing media work and news coverage and other media was there too. All because I had forgotten my media credentials and actually I haven’t been charged with anything yet as I’m still going to court over it. My lawyer says the charges will be dropped and I provided my media credentials. But Now Amazon Flex said I failed my background check. That’s really stupid of you ask me that I didn’t pass because of that. That has nothing to do with driving or something that would effect how I perform at work.

I have one extremely minor accident where a screw from my license plate bumped a car in front of me because of an ambulance passing by. I have applied for the Amazon Flex driving program in beginning of 2016 and I had some driving license points on my abstract. I have no criminal record. My points will be coming off from my driving record so is it possible I can call the Accurate Background Check Company and inform them that my points are off is it possible you can pass my background check? Will that be possible? Your reply to my concern would be greatly appreciated it. I will be waiting for your reply back at my email: MT336056@GMAIL.COM

Thank You

folks please understand. This amazon vetting process is another ruse to deter ex felons and people who they deemed deplorable. In this new era. 4/10 have felonies. that slims the market for people with police record. it is designed that way so that society will be divided by class in the year 2022. The states will be divided by income sectors/District…california is the forunner in the revolution. Why do you think politicians and lobbyists support this type of dicrimination and vetting process.?
Fuck amazon,Lyft,Uber and all those ride sharing programs. Cannot wait till a person with a clean record go ape shit at work and shoot the place up like UPS did last year. This vetting process needs to go and everyone should get a fair shake

Hi, I just received a failed on my background check, I have no arrests, no accidents, I actually work for the state, so I am wondering why I was rejected. Can I call the background people or get in contact with Amazon?

So I received my report from Amazon flex and I didn’t qualify. I don’t get it! I have no criminal record, and I have no points on my license. 1 minor accident and a ticket more the 3 years ago for a careless driving. That’s it!!! Any suggestions?!?

I have no criminal history or driving accidents. In the app it says failed. Something isn’t quite right with that.
